Why We Started Making Our Own Kobudo Weapons

Why We Started Making Our Own Kobudo Weapons

We spend a lot of time around martial arts equipment.

Some of it is great. Some of it is fine. Some of it feels like it was designed to survive a warehouse more than to feel good in your hands.

Eventually, we started asking a simple question:

Why not make our own?

That is how Onna Kimono ended up developing small-batch kobudo weapons.

Not because the world desperately needed another mass-produced option, but because there was room for something more thoughtful, more personal, and more interesting to train with.

Small batch. Hand finished. Built for training.

Our kobudo weapons are made in small runs from domestic American hardwoods and finished by hand in Idaho.

We are not trying to make every piece look identical.

Real wood has grain, tone, variation, and character. That is part of what makes each weapon feel different.

The nunchaku are individually sanded, finished, and corded. The kama are built with natural hardwood handles, dull training blades, pinned construction, and protective wrap at the blade-to-handle connection.

They are training weapons first.

They just happen to be pretty.

Bonk bonk whoosh sticks, but make them beautiful.

Our handcrafted hardwood nunchaku are built in limited combinations of length, shape, wood, and paracord.

Each model gets its own name because “Model A” and “Model B” felt painfully boring.

When a finished pair is listed, you are buying that exact combination.

No stock-photo guessing. No endless custom-build menu. Just the pair you see.

Handmade hardwood training kama with purple wave-pattern wrap and Made in USA engraving on the blades

Your slicing sticks deserve to be a little special.

The kama follow the same idea.

Natural hardwood. Dull training blades. Small batches.

Current protective wrap options include purple wave, black wave, and yellow wave, and personalization may be available on the lower wooden handle.

Made for training

These are martial arts training weapons, and they should be treated like training equipment.

Our kama are intentionally dull. Our nunchaku and kama should be inspected before use, maintained appropriately, and used in a proper training space.

Wood, cord, wrap, pins, and other components can wear over time.

We created a dedicated safety and care page covering inspection, maintenance, storage, and responsible use:

A little personalization

We are offering limited engraving because sometimes a name, word, symbol, or piece of artwork makes a weapon feel a little more like yours.

We are not doing fully custom builds.

If you are interested in engraving, leave a personalization note with your order and we will follow up about placement, artwork, and cost.

For Japanese characters, customers must provide the exact characters or artwork they want engraved.

Why small batch?

Because we like it that way.

Small batches let the wood change.

The wrap colors can change.

A model can disappear for a while.

And once a particular combination is gone, you may have to wait for it to come back.

That is part of the fun.

What’s next?

Nunchaku and kama are only the beginning.

We are planning to test one-piece hardwood tonfa using our CNC setup, with the goal of producing the body and handle from a single piece of wood rather than attaching them separately.

That will take some experimenting.

We are also looking at wooden tekko, which should be a fun addition to the short-weapons side of the line.

For now, that is where our focus is:

Nunchaku. Kama. Tonfa. Tekko.

We are not planning to move into long weapons like bo or eku, and metal weapons such as sai are outside our scope.

So this is the lane we are building:

Small-batch wooden kobudo weapons, made to train and made to be a little different.

Built to train.

Made to be yours.
